Drain Cleaning vs Drain Clearing: What's the Difference?
They sound like the same job. They are not — and choosing the wrong one is why so many drains clog again a month later. This guide explains the difference, when each is right, and what a recurring clog is really telling you.

Drain clearing: removing the blockage
Clearing removes the blockage that is there now. A drain snake or auger punches through the clog — hair, grease, food, a foreign object — and water flows again. It is fast, it is the cheaper option, and for a one-off clog it is all you need. Drain cleaning typically runs $134–$350, and clearing sits at the lower end of that work.
Drain cleaning: removing the buildup
Cleaning removes the buildup on the pipe walls as well as the blockage. Over years, grease, soap, scale, and waste coat the inside of a drain line, narrowing it a little at a time. Clearing punches a hole through the clog; cleaning strips the walls back toward their original diameter, so the next clog takes far longer to form. Hydro jetting — high-pressure water that scours the pipe — is the main cleaning method, and it is the right tool for heavy grease, scale, and recurring clogs.
When each is the right choice
| Situation | Right choice |
|---|---|
| First clog, single fixture | Clearing |
| Clog returns within weeks or months | Cleaning — the walls are the problem |
| Grease or scale buildup | Cleaning / hydro jetting |
| Multiple fixtures slow at once | Main-line work — see a professional; may be a sewer issue |
| Sewage backing up | Emergency — see our sewer backup repair page |
Recurring clogs: what they really mean
A drain that clogs, gets cleared, and clogs again is not having bad luck. It means the cause was never removed: buildup on the walls, tree roots in the line, a broken or sagging pipe, or a partial blockage further down the line. If a drain has been cleared twice and clogged again, ask for a sewer camera inspection — typically $150–$400 — before paying for a third clearing. The camera shows whether the problem is buildup, roots, or a damaged pipe, and the fix follows from what it shows.
