Hard Water in Mississippi: How It Damages Your Plumbing

By Mississippi Plumbing 247 Editorial Team · Published November 6, 2026

Hard water does not flood a house overnight. It works slowly — scale on fixtures, sediment in water heaters, narrowing pipes — until something fails and the failure looks sudden. This guide explains what hard water does to Mississippi plumbing, and when it is an emergency and when it is not.

What hard water is

Hard water carries dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. When the water is heated or evaporates, the minerals stay behind as scale — the white crust on a faucet aerator or showerhead, the chalky film on glass, the spots on dishes. The scale you can see is the least of it; the scale you cannot see, inside pipes and water heaters, is what causes the damage.

How it damages plumbing

Water heaters: mineral sediment settles at the bottom of a tank, where it insulates the water from the burner or element, causes rumbling and popping, reduces efficiency, and shortens the unit's life. A flush — typically $150–$500 — removes sediment. Pipes: scale narrows the inside of pipes over years, reducing water pressure and flow. Fixtures and appliances: scale clogs aerators and showerheads, stiffens valves, and wears out dishwasher and washing-machine parts early. Drains: mineral buildup combines with soap and grease to form stubborn clogs.

The Mississippi picture — including soft water

Mississippi water varies by source. DeSoto County draws on the Memphis aquifer, which is relatively soft water — less scale than in harder-water areas — but mineral content is still present, and sediment still builds up in water heaters over time. In other parts of the state, and in homes on well water, mineral levels can be higher. The practical point is the same everywhere: if you see scale on fixtures, your water heater is collecting sediment too. Our water heater leaking guide explains how sediment shortens a unit's life.

Signs of hard water

When is it an emergency — and when is it not?

Hard water itself is almost never an emergency. A water softener is routine, non-emergency work — we do not offer softener installation as an emergency service. But the damage hard water causes can become an emergency: a water heater that leaks because sediment corroded the tank, a pipe that bursts because scale narrowed it and pressure built up, a drain that backs up because of years of buildup. If any of those happen, call (662) 550-8213 — see our emergency water heater repair and emergency drain cleaning pages.
